Slavery from 1607-1775 essays

Slavery from 1607-1775 essays Between the years of 1607-1775, slavery in the southern colonies underwent tremendous growth. Clearly, there were three main factors which influenced its rapid increase in prevalence in these agricultural colonies. The original reason for the institution of slavery was primarily based upon economic reasons. White plantation owners needed a replacement for the indentured servants, who were rapidly becoming quite inconvenient. Closely tied to the economic reasons were the social motives of white plantation owners for African slaves. African slaves were already somewhat weathered in their homeland. Once in the New World, the social ties of the blacks actually aided in their population growth. Lastly, geographic reasons, such as the triangle trade, and simple cross-Atlantic voyage made African slavery a viable option. In 1619, the first slaves made the torturous journey across the Atlantic from their homes on the coast of Africa to an unknown land; Jamestown, Virginia. This infamous year marked the start of three centuries of inhumane slave trading, on a three-part route known as the triangular trade. The primary reason for the importation of African slaves was due to the growing disadvantages of white indentured servants from Britain. For around fifty years, the slave population remained relatively insignificant in the British colonies. Drastic change occurred following Bacons Rebellion in 1676. This rebellion, led by Nathaniel Bacon, was comprised of a group of one thousand Virginians who rebelled against their governor, William Berkeley. Although eventually suppressed, this uprising caused great physical damage to Virginia. Far worse, however, was the psychological damage it left with the plantation owners in the colony. Due to Bacons Rebellion, wealthy plantation owners began to sea rch for a new group of workers who could do the same job without the revolts. In the ensuing decade, rising wages in Englan...

Alkali Metal Definition (Chemistry)

Alkali Metal Definition (Chemistry) An alkali metal is any of the elements found in Group IA of the periodic table  (the first column). Alkali metals are very reactive chemical species which readily lose their one valence electron to form ionic compounds with nonmetals. All elements in the alkali metal group occur in nature. List of Alkali Metals The alkali metals are: Lithium  (Li)Sodium (Na)Potassium  (K)Rubidium (Rb)Cesium  (Cs)Francium (Fr) The IUPAC excludes hydrogen (H) as an alkali metal because it occurs as a gas under ordinary temperatures and pressures. However, hydrogen displays many of the properties associated with elements in the group and does become an alkali metal under extremely high pressure. Alkali Metal Properties The alkali metals are all soft, shiny, reactive metals. Although they are soft enough to cut with a knife, exposing a bright surface, the metals react with water and air to quickly tarnish. The pure metals are stored in an inert atmosphere or under oil to prevent oxidation. All of the metals react vigorously with water, with the energy of the reaction increasing as you move down the periodic table. None of the alkali metals exists free in nature. They are found as salts. All of the metals form crystals with the body-centered cubic structure. Sources Greenwood, Norman N.; Earnshaw, Alan (1997). Chemistry of the Elements (2nd ed.). Shakespeare in love Movie Review Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Shakespeare in love - Movie Review Example The film revolves around the basic fact that how love changed the life of Shakespeare; once when he was betrayed by his lover and the time, when he was unable to complete his comedy play as the tragedy of Romeo Juliet and at the other time, when Viola de Lesseps brought happiness and inspiration in his life and he completed his project under the influence of love. Love can leave a huge impact on the life of a person; either negatively or positively. After watching this movie, I felt that William Shakespeare, the greatest writer as known to the entire world, had same emotional feelings like any of us. He was no different from a common man. Love was the greatest inspiration in his life which made him a successful man and an emotional playwright. During the Elizabethan age, theater and literature rose to a great height. Queen Elizabeth was very much fond of Shakespeare’ plays and supported the theaters. However, during this period women were not allowed to participate in plays and theaters due to societal norms and restrictions. In this movie, Viola de Lesseps went against the rules of society and disguised herself as a man to participate in Shakespeare’s play but the theater had to pay the heavy price for her involvement in the play as soon as the officials came to know about the truth. The movie highlights the era when women were deprived of their rights and involvement in arts and literature much broadly. After watching the movie, I realized that William Shakespeare had the same feelings like an ordinary man who derived his inspirations from living examples, more particularly, his own ones. Love has played a key role in giving a romantic and emotional touch to his work. In the movie, he has appeared as a sensitive man to whom love meant everything and a divine inspiration which helped him to achieve new heights in the world

History of Coca Cola Essay Example for Free

History of Coca Cola Essay About the Company: The first signs of the Coca-Cola Company started out in Atlanta in 1886 when a pharmacist named John Pemberton developed a caramel colored carbonated drink and sampled it to customers. Soon after, the drink was for sale at five cents a glass, selling about nine glasses a day in the local pharmacy. After Pemberton’s death in 1888, an Atlanta businessman named Asa Griggs Candler, secured the rights to Coca-Cola for a total of $2300 and it was at this time that Coca-Cola transformed from an invention into a business. Over the next several years, through coupons, advertisement, and sampling, the demand for Coca-Cola continued to grow making it necessary to open syrup plants in Chicago, Dallas, and Los Angeles. In 1899, two lawyers secured the rights from Candler to sell Coca-Cola in portable bottle sized serving, as opposed to only being offered in the soda fountains. Not realizing the popularity bottles would have, Candler sold the rights for just one dollar. Going into the new century, Coca-Cola continued to see rapid growth moving into other countries including Canada, Panama, Puerto Rico, France, and Cuba to name a few. From having just two bottlers in 1990, Coca-Cola had almost 1000 bottlers in 1920. Over the next twenty year, focus was on introducing the beverage around the world with much success. After 70 years of success with Coca-Cola, the company began introducing other flavored beverages including Fanta ®, Tab ®, Fresca ®, and Sprite ®. The company’s presence was growing more and more internationally in countries such as Cambodia, Turkey, and Paraguay. In1971, the company was selected to be the only company allowed to sell packaged cold drinks in The Peoples Republic of China. During the 1980’s, Diet Coke was introduced and the company made an attempt at developing a new improved formula for Coca-Cola. While this had good test panel results, when the new formula was introduced on the market, the public begged for the old formula to be reinstated. The public opinion eventually won and Coca-Cola Classic was back on the shelves. The 1990’s  brought other new beverages to the line up including Dasani ® bottled water, Powerade ® sports drink, and Barq’s ® root beer. The company continued to move into other countries including East Germany and India. By 1997, the company was up to over 1 billion servings of their product a day and continually growing. Coca-Cola started out as an experiment in a pharmacy selling just nine glasses a day and now has over 500 brands world wide selling over 1.7 billion servings per day. Even with the tough economy, Coca-Cola has continued its growth and remains to be a beverage that consumers reach for da ily, not just in the United States, but all over the world.

The Price of Objectivity :: essays research papers

The Price of Objectivity   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway is one of the pre-eminent works of modernist literature. It set the tone for the several decades of literature that was to follow. It delves deeply into the 'lost generation' that was created after the first wold war. A generation that lost any idealism that their predecessors had. A generation that lost any emotional attachment to the world around them. This is a trait that is predominant throughout Hemingway's novel as the narrator, Jake Barnes, remains clinically detached from the events that transpire around him.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Jake was an ambulance driver in the first world war and as with many of his peers, his experiences left him with a severe emotional disillusionment with the world as a whole. Not to mention the lack of functioning genitalia which certainly didn't help him identify positively with the world. Essentially, if it didn't involve Jake, he couldn't care less. For example, Jake watches a man get gored through the back by a stampeding bull and die, then waits for the rocket to go off signaling that the bulls were coralled and then simply walks off. He doesn't concern himself with the health of the (then) wounded man, he doesn't contemplate whether the running of the bulls was a worthwhile risk in the name of fun and games. He simply watches, then leaves without the slightest tint of subjectivity to his narrative. He remains perfectly objective, simply a watcher in the grand scheme of life.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  And what does Jake watch exactly? He watches as everything goes around in circles, always ending up in the same place as it started. The group as a whole heads out drinking, only to wake up the next morning to repeat the process with nothing changed. Brett, although engaged to a man who loves her, is hopelessly in love with Jake. Jake is forced to watch as she passes along from Mike, to Cohn, to Romero and then back to Mike before finally ending up right back where she started with Jake. Jake watches as every event he witness returns full circle. A cycle that the title, 'The Sun Also Rises', refers to. Just like the sun also rises only to hasten to the place where it arose, so do the events of the characters in the book, giving off the image that life is futile and nothing ever gets accomplished.

Lord of the Flies and the Story of Creation

Satan, Prince of Darkness, Lucifer, Iblis; no matter what title he bears, the devil is the most recognizable and distinct representation of evil In existence. In the story of Adam and Eve, the devil's wicked evilness takes the form of temptation. He uses temptation to stray Eve from the path of God, the path she was created to follow. In the Lord of the Flies evil disguises itself as temptation yet again. The boys are tempted by their persisting desires to leave their civilized morals behind and indulge in the vicious and untroubled ways of savagery.Numerous parallel themes, in ddition to evil disguised as temptation, between Lord of the Flies and the story of Adam and Eve are present. Themes such as original purity, the spread of sin, chance for redemption and tainted innocence. When Adam was created by God from the â€Å"dust on the ground and the breath of life† (Genesis 2:7) and Eve from Adam's rib, they were perfect, pure human beings and devoutly loyal to God. Similarly, when the boys first arrive on the island they are unwavering In their devotion to maintain civilized morals and disciplined behavior. In chapter 2, Jack displays this devotion by nnouncing to the group, â€Å"We've got to have rules and obey them. After all, we're not savages. We're English, and the English are best at everything. † In the beginning of both plots, the characters of the story are pure in their Innocence and loyalty to what they believe is right. Adam and Eve pure in their loyalty to God and the boys retain their innocence by maintaining civilized behavior. Jack and Eve have one clear thing in common; they both lead their companions in straying from the path of righteousness.Eve by being the first to give into the evil temptation of eating the fruit nd Jack by glvlng In to the evil temptation of power and the â€Å"compulsion to track down and kill that was swallowing him up. † Subsequently after, the evil that engulfed Jack and Eve quickly spreads to th eir companions like a terribly contagious disease. Eve convinces Adam to eat the forbidden fruit as well, thus damning them both. Jack starts a new savage tribe that most of the members from the civilized tribe quickly Join.Upon witnessing this conversion from good to evil Ralph remarks, â€Å"The world, that understandable and lawful world. was slipping away,† Later in the book. aces savage ways even begin to infect two of the most civilized boys left on the Island. During one of Jack's feasts, Ralph and Piggy â€Å"found themselves eager to take a place in this demented but partly secure society. They were glad to touch the brown backs of the fence that hemmed In the terror and made it governable. † In continuance of his custom, God goes to visit Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. When they hear him coming they grow ashamed of their nakedness, something they had never noticed before, and try to cover themselves with leaves and hide from him. God, being all knowing, p retends to search for them. He does this in order to give Adam and Eve an opportunity to return to Him and acknowledge their sin. The British Naval offcer that arrives on the island in Lord of the Flies represents what was originally good and right in the eyes of the boys, as does God In the eyes of Adam and Eve.When the boys come storming out of the burning forest to discover their saviors standing on the beach, they feel no Joy but shame. Shame for the uncivilized ways 1 OF2 tney nave conauctea tnemselves. In emoarrassment was only ampllTlea wnen the British Navvy Officer remarked, â€Å"l should have thought that a pack of British boys†¦ ould have been able to put up a better show than that. † This humiliation experienced by the boys is similar to that of Adam and Eve. In correspondence with God's actions in the Garden of Eden, the Navvy officer â€Å"turned away to give them time to pull themselves together. In warning Adam and Eve of the dangers of the Tree of Know ledge of Good and Evil, God says, mfou may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die. † (Genesis 2:16-17) God's warning proves itself very true. Upon eating the fruit, their spiritual death is immediate, Adam and Eve are spiritually separated from God and lose a part of themselves they will never truly regain. The boys in The Lord of the Flies lose something of great value as well; their innocence. In realization of this, Ralph â€Å"wept for the end of innocence. † Both the boys on the island and Adam and Eve permanently tainted their purity in falling victim to the temptations of evil. â€Å"Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. † â€Å"He is everywhere represented as the deceiver, ssuming false guises, and making false representations. † (Peter 5:8) (Corint hians 2:14) Both Adam and Eve and the boys in Lord of the Flies were deceived by the false guises of the the devil's evil. The bible categorizes evil in two groups; evil against one another, such as murder, theft, and adultery and evil against God such as idolatry and blasphemy. The Devil tempted the characters in the two stories to commit both evil against one and another and evil against God. Adam and Eve committed evil against God by disobeying his orders and Eve committed evil against Adam by convincing him to eat the fruit. In Lord of the Flies the boys committed evil against one another in numerous ways. They murdered Simon, Piggy, and attempted to kill Ralph. In the book, civilized behavior and morals represented God. They committed Evil against God/civilization by losing faith and worshipping symbols of their savagery (pig's head and beast). In the world today, evil against God is very frequently committed because in most people's eyes, it is not true evil. From the Connecticu t shooting to domestic abuse, in society today it seems as if people are carelessly making no effort to resist the devil's temptations to commit evil against one another.

Drugs and Behavior Essay

Substance abuse describes the increased use of a substance which is likely to have negative effect on the body. Substance abuse refers to the use of substance like alcohol, cigarettes and other hard drugs or the use of common medical drugs for pleasure purposes. Substance abuse has remained to be a leading problem among the youths in all parts of the world. The use of alcohol has particularly remained a thorny issue in the world especially concerning the problem of underage drinking. The legal age of drinking remains one of the most controversial issues in the US and in many other countries in the world. Increased underage drinking has been attributed to many factors. Issues like the increased access of alcohol and lack of restriction alcohol purchase process have surfaced several times when we are referring to substance abuse. But all these are secondary factor which can be attributed to the increased rise of alcohol abuse in the underage youths. The most influential factor that has been identified in a number of studies has been the influence of the media on the youths. Several studies have singled out the influence of the media as the leading factor in alcohol abuse with media advertisement which features alcohol and the inclusion of alcohol and cigarettes in the popular music and films have been singled out. Media influence on youths and effects on use of alcohol There have been many concerns about e effect of the media on the increased use of alcohol among the youths. It has bee shown that alcohol placement and the alcohol advertisement have a multiple effects the rate of consumption among the youths. TV, Radios and films have also been found to have a lot of influence on the youths as far as alcohol consumption pattern is concerned. The mass media has been single out as one of the most influential avenue through which youths learn substance abuse. Young people have shown increased trend through which they learn the use of alcohol and other substances abuse especially drinking of alcohol and smoking of cigarettes. There is increased advertisement of alcohol compared to other drinks in the media which is influencing the youths negatively. A study carried out by Mathios, et al, (1998) found out that there was increased advertisement of alcohol in the primetime news compared to other foods and drinks. The study which was carried out ion two weeks of broadcast television program selection from ABC, CBS, FOX and the NBC found out that food and beverages episodes within the programs were more frequently featured compared to other foods. Alcohol was the most food appearing for all ages and it accounted for a big percent of foods and drinks incidents for the adolescents. The fact that there are more appearances of these programs on the TV and which were viewed by majority of the youths had an influence on the youths. The study postulated that this was likely to influence adolescent more than the grown up because they could not differentiate the kind of message the latent meaning in the message. A unit of analysis that was carried out by Hazan and Glantz in 1995 found out the there was increased influence on the use of alcohol which has been attributed to the increased advertisement of alcohol and other substances in the prime time fictional television. This study showed the increased appearance of alcohol and other drug related messages during the prime time fictional television news had and overall effect of increasing the rate of consumption of these drugs among the youths. The study found out that about 24 programs which were aired during the time of the study contained alcohol and tobacco events at least in every program that was aired every day. More that 982 percent of these program were pro-tobacco or pro alcohol while only 8 percent were anti-smoking or anti drinking. In terms of evaluation of these effects on the viewers, the study recognized that more than 52 percent the viewers most in the youth category aged 13-24 were positively influenced by the massages. Most of them responded that the fact that there was more drinking and smoking in the television compared to the real life promoted them to adopt the practices. The study also found out that there were higher status characters that were likely to smoke compared to low status characters. This means that most of those who smoked in the TV were celebrities who were likely to have a lot of influence on the youths. The high rate of smoking appearing on the television and the fact that mot of it was found among high caliber people influenced the youths to smoke. A study which was carried out by Chan, et al, (2005) found out that there was a great influence of alcohol on the youth. The study which sought to identify the response of the young people to alcohol advertisement showed the underage youth were more drawn to music, animal and other character and which are related to alcohol advertisement. This study which was carried out among the youths in a high school identified the particular influence of the inclusion of pop music and other popular films on their overall behavior to drinking. The study found out that the advertisement which were liked by the youths had the potential of eliciting response from majority of the youths and they are likely to purchase these brands which are advertisements. However the study also identified that most of the leading advertisement which influenced the youths more positively used animal character like lions, elephant which are likely to be associated with strength and fame among the youths. A recent review of the neuroscience which looked at the psychology in marketing literatures found out that most of the adolescents due to the brain development changes that they undergo are likely to be attracted to particular brands which are famous. Most of these brands are particularly associated with risky behaviors and are also likely to elicit immediate gratification, thrills and may even raise the social status of those who are associated with drinking. The study by Pechmann (2005) identified the impulsive and self conscious and it looked at the vulnerability to the advertisement and promotion. This study like several other which had been carried out before identified that youths were particularly prone to risk advertisement. Those advertisements which showed increased appeal for the youths and were related to increased use of alcohol were likely to elicit increased alcohol purchases among the youths. Fleming (2004) looked into alcohol advertising exposure and perception and its influence on the youths found out that a high exposure to alcohol advertising in most cases shapes attitudes and the their perception about the use of alcohol among the young people. This study defined young people as those who were aged 15 to 20 years and the young adults were aged 21 to 29. However the study identified that these attitudes and perception predicted the way young people identified their positive expectancies and their intentions and encouraged them to drink. However this influence was found to be lower among the young adults compared to the youths. This study found out that the youths changed their perception about drinking and other substances according to what they were hearing from the advertisements. They are likely to drink more with the increased exposure to advertisement which have alcohols messages. There are many other studies which were can review here which gives the same results. These studies contain important information which shows that there is a high rate of influence of advertisement on the youths and the change of their behaviors in consumption of alcohol. The youths are more prone to advertisement and they are not likely to differentiate the advertisements which give more positive messages and which give more negative messages. Unlike the grown up who have a more rational thinking process where they can identify the meaning in the advertisements and differential the effects the youths are more prone to the influence of advertisements on their behaviors. These studies depicts that medial influences is the single most factor which is influencing most of the youths to consume alcohol. Like advertisement, pop music and popular videos have also been found to have a lot of influence on the youths. They have been found to have a lot of influence same s the TV and Radio commercial. Pop music and popular videos have multiple influences because they usually include alcohol and cigarette messages and they are also related to celebrities who have a lot of following among the youths. Conclusion The problem of alcohol abuse continues to be one of the most debatable issues in the world. This debate has taken many dimensions including the failing society to act on the problem, the factor of alcohol seller and the easy access to alcohol by the under aged, and many other factor. But the factor of alcohol advertisement has remained a thorny issue in the debate with many studies replicating that increased exposure of the youths to alcohol advertisement has an effect of increasing the overall use of alcohol.

E-Business - Essay Example The attributes are the various properties which are highlighted in ovals and represent the various features of the system. Frawley (2001) mentions that knowledge of the business system can be derived easily by using the logical designs of the database of the organization where information is very valuable to be stored for effective and efficient retrieval. The very organization of the hotel into departments and their location are the prime factors for designing the network topology and the technologies to be used for efficient communication and sharing of information (Physinfo, 2006). Using LAN the computers are interconnected within the office or building premises so that all the employees are able to get information on demand. The head office has a central server where all the information us stored in the database. The other offices are also networked using the LAN technologies. The switch is two layered and used to take care of the storing and forwarding mechanism as stated in Tanenbaum
